Men who take Viagra should speak to a GP to get their prescription.

By

A spokeswoman for the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said: “Men who use Viagra, also known as sildenafil, may be at increased risk of certain adverse reactions.

“The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said it had received complaints from men who were taking a prescription drug such as Viagra.

“The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency also added that there are no indications that Viagra is addictive.

“In response to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s recommendation, a consultation was held with two independent prescribers, in order to assess the risks.

“The consultation was conducted under strict medical supervision, and, although results did not appear to be satisfactory to the prescriber, the pharmacist is confident in their judgement of the appropriateness of the treatment.

“The consultation was carried out on the advice of a pharmacist with whom we are working closely.”

The drug was approved by the MHRA in September last year after a number of adverse reactions were identified.

The medication was prescribed for erectile dysfunction in men who took it for a similar condition.

The UK regulator is thought to be the first in the world to have the MHRA approve a medication to treat erectile dysfunction.

It has a number of side effects including:

“This is not an exhaustive list of all adverse reactions to Viagra.

“There have been reports of dizziness, drowsiness, or loss of vision, although these side effects are very rare and are very uncommon.”

Viagra is one of the world’s leading prescription medicines.

The MHRA is working with the UK regulatory authorities to ensure that men can take the drug safely and effectively for the first time, to avoid any serious risks.

This means that men can now take Viagra under the supervision of their GP.

Last October the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said it had received complaints from men who were taking a prescription drug such as Viagra.

In a letter to its website it added: “Viagra has not been approved by the MHRA and is not currently registered in the UK.”

It said it was aware of the serious risk but that “there are no indications that Viagra is addictive”.

Viagra 50mg tablet contains an active component such as Sildenafil. This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra may have side effects, including headache, flushing, dizziness, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and vision changes. It should not be taken with certain medications or conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using it. Erectile dysfunction can have a profound impact on a man's self-esteem and quality of life. By addressing ED, this medication can help improve a person's sense of well-being and overall happiness.

Individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart problems (angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats) or recent heart attack, should exercise caution when using Viagra. The sexual activity itself can strain the heart and can further increase the strain by increasing blood flow. Consult with a healthcare professional to assess the risks and benefits in such cases. This medication can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure. Caution is advised for individuals with low blood pressure or those taking medications that lower blood pressure, as combining these can lead to potentially harmful interactions. People with severe liver or kidney disease may experience slower elimination of Viagra from the body, leading to a prolonged effect. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.
